SPANISH SPEAKING COMMUNITY ORGANIZER

Job Description:
Women Encouraging Empowerment Inc. mission is to advocate for and advance the rights of immigrants, refugees, and low-income women and their families. We strive to achieve this mission by providing English education, leadership development, and resources to combat domestically abusive situations.
WEE is committed to providing a supportive community in which refugee and immigrant women can organize and lead the social change they require in their communities. This focus on self-advocacy promotes the development of communities in which the contributions of women and ethic/cultural diversity are qualities that are appreciated.
Women Encouraging Empowerment Inc. (WEE) is hiring a part-time Community Organizer. This person will be a core part of the WEE team and who is bilingual, bicultural Spanish speaker with experience in community organizing, outreach and networking. This position will require working at a variety locations within the community and Greater Boston Area. The Community Organizer position is part-time of between 20-25 hours/week. This position is grant funded and there is opportunity to increase hours.
The role of the Community Organizer is to promote community engagement, leadership development, partnership/alliance building, and development of new and relevant member led campaigns.The Community Organizer is responsible for: mobilizing WEE participants, conduct outreach to Revere residents, coordinate neighborhood events, and liaise with community-based groups as well as connecting with the full diversity of Revere.  The Community Organizer will think strategically and analytically about social, economic, cultural, and political issues affecting our community.You are accountable to promote information exchange and opportunities with the membership of WEE and provide thorough verbal and written reports to the WEE Program Director and Board of Directors.
 
Qualification:
  • Commitment to social justice
  • Experience of 2 years plus working with immigrants and in low-income urban communities
  • English and Spanish verbal and writing skills required
  • Willingness to work flexible hours
  • Excellent communication skills
  • BA is preferred
  • The Community Organizer will maintain a cohesive, safe and fun social environment that allows individual women participants to freely explore matters relating to their culture, family, religion and community.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Coordinates programs designed to promote the organization and its services to the community and our target population. 
  • Provide support to WEE Parent Lead Organizer’s and participants on their campaigns for social justice
  • Identify, recruit and develop women leadership; build community around leadership; and build power out of community.
  • Bring people together; challenge them to act on behalf of their shared values and interests.
  • Engage members and participants in discerning why they should act to change their world – their values – and how they can act to change it – their strategy
  • Engage people in articulating the call to action as a shared story of the challenges they must face.
  • Expand WEE membership base, and challenge members to commit to act, and to act effectively
  • Develop a grassroots strategy and raise WEE's visibility and organizing work
  • Community outreach and recruitment and promotes attendance at organization and community  meetings and events
  • Engage members in deliberating about how they can turn what they have (resources), into what they need (power) to get what they want (their interests) to strategy
  • Facilitate training and workshops when needed to help WEE participants, members and leaders learn the skills they need
  • Represent WEE at community and neighborhood events, forums and meetings and build relationships within the community, region and with diverse groups.
  • Maintain current and create new partnerships with other community and neighborhood groups and organizations.
  • Coordinate and carry out logistics for meetings, events and relevant activities for WEE organizing Initiatives.
  • Work with staff to design and maintain communication tools such as websites, Facebook, flyers, e-blasts, blog posts and emails.
  • Prepare reports on WEE’s organizing Initiative activities as required, for submission to funders, Director, Board and other stakeholders.
  • Strive to be accountable and hold others accountable in every aspect of your job
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned.

This work will include some weekends and evenings.

Internships

We are currently seeking to fill the position(s) below:

​EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT

Job Description:
​Women Encouraging Empowerment is looking for an Executive Assistant to help with the operations of our organization. This intern will work closely with our Executive Director to help New American women (mainly immigrant and refugee women) and their families gain economic and social mobility through ESL, citizenship and job readiness courses. This position is for anyone who wants experience in community organizing, greater knowledge of the hardships New Americans face and the solutions to combat these issues, and understanding of how gender issues intersect with the international political and social agenda.

​Desired Skills:
The ideal candidate would:
  • Currently be working towards a bachelor's degree studying gender and/or international issues (or a similar discipline)
  • Have experience with or a desire to work with New Americans (immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, etc.)
  • Identify as female (although relevant experience is preferred and exceptions can be made)

Responsibilities:
  • Help plan and coordinate courses, fundraisers, and awareness events
  • Attend conferences and leadership workshops, representing our organization
  • Write blog posts about courses, programs, and current events related to organization
  • Update all social media accounts: website, Twitter, FB, and IG
  • Work one on one with clients, assisting them with applications, course work, and/or any other type of issue
  • Manage communications: donation thank-you letters, e-mails, and phone
  • Help the Executive Director with other related matters

This is an unpaid internship; candidates may be able to receive college credit for their time***
